Bill Bernstein – The Disco Photographs

Biography

Bill Bernstein

Bill Bernstein is a successful commercial and editorial photographer living in New York City. His photographic career began at the Village Voice in the 1970s where he documented pop culture and street photography. He went on to shoot celebrity portraiture for Elle Magazine and his work has since appeared in magazines and journals around the world.

More recently, Bernstein has worked as Sir Paul McCartney’s personal tour photographer for fifteen years, capturing rare and intimate on-stage and off-stage moments of McCartney, his band and crew.

“I have always been fascinated by the power of the documentary photograph as a means of understanding a person or an era and have a passion for vintage photographs from the early 1900's. I love seeing archival images of New York City, Paris and London, as well as rural life from this period and being momentarily transported back to a life without today’s super-fast technology and lifestyle.“

Of the late 70s Disco era, Bernstein says, “I am just happy that I was there with my camera to document this ground-breaking time of acceptance and individuality. It was a momentary glimpse of a culture of inclusion that we are only beginning to see emerging in our world today.”
